Understanding Offenders in the Context of Family

Singapore After-Care Association

About this course

Family plays a crucial role in shaping who we are as a person; it has a huge influence on one’s values, beliefs and behaviours. Understanding the history and dynamics of a family can help us better understand an offender’s criminal behaviours. To promote the effective rehabilitation of offenders, there needs to be an understanding and assessment of their family background and situation. Where feasible and appropriate, the families should be involved in offenders’ rehabilitation and reintegration.

Upon completing the course, you will gain a better understanding of the complex interplay of factors that contribute to criminal behaviours by examining family dynamics and their impact on offenders. This knowledge can assist us in identifying areas which need our intervention and/or the intervention of our community partners.
