About this course
Singapore Red Cross Academy, the training arm of Singapore Red Cross, provides humanitarian studies to build capacity and strengthen community resilience. The Academy is the region’s go-to institute for humanitarian studies, backed by more than five decades of knowledge and expertise in teaching standards. It offers a series of specialised first aid and psychosocial support courses, as well as other humanitarian education programmes.
In 2023, Singapore Red Cross Academy trained over 15,000 people in various courses, and is trusted by over 1,300 companies for staff training. Singapore Red Cross Academy strives to empower individuals and communities to help save lives.
About the Course
This 1-hour water safety education awareness e-course is designed to equip participants with the essential awareness of water safety and knowledge on how to respond to water hazards and accidents.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. List the general water safety rules and guidelines.
2. Identify the common water hazards.
3. Recognize situations of distress and recall the appropriate response actions in the event of water hazards or emergencies.
4. Cite examples of everyday items that could be used for water safety.
5. Describe the basic survival and rescue techniques in water.

With years of experience in teaching learn to swim as well as teaching infants, toddlers, and individuals with special needs, Shirlyn combines expertise with a compassionate approach to make water safety accessible and engaging for all. As a swim school owner and an international SwimFin ambassador, Shirlyn has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of building water confidence and safety awareness. Her commitment to inclusivity drives her mission to ensure that every individual—regardless of swimming ability—can learn life-saving techniques and develop a deeper respect for water. Through collaboration with the Singapore Red Cross and Singapore University of Social Sciences, Shirlyn has played a pivotal role in developing the First Responders Water Safety Program. She believes that anyone, not just strong swimmers or lifeguards, can make a difference during water emergencies. Her approach focuses on practical strategies, empowering participants to act confidently in crisis situations.
